What is Adaptive Management?

Adaptive management (AM) is being incorporated as a follow-on tool in the environmental impact assessment (EIA) process in the United States, Canada, member states in the European Community, and elsewhere throughout the world. The EIA process, also called the NEPA (National Environmental Policy Act) process in the USA, has traditionally concluded with the completion of an EIS (or an EIA report). The AM tool, which had its origins in natural resources management, is focused on reducing impact uncertainties via learning, and incorporating this new knowledge into subsequent project (plan or action) management decisions. The use of AM is seen by many as a new best practice for EIA.

What You Will Learn

  • How Adaptive Management can be used in both short-term and long-term decision-making regarding effective impact mitigation and environmental management.

  • Use of a range of models for understanding pertinent environmental systems
  • Delineation of a range of management choices which could be examined within the learning process
  • Planning a targeted monitoring program and evaluation of program findings
  • Use of a systematic decision-making process for incorporating learning into subsequent decisions
